The Ventspils city beach is between the eleven Latvian swimming
places for which this year, the Blue Flags will be raised in
compliance with the decisions of the international Blue Flag jury.
This season will be the twelfth time The Blue Flag will wave on the
Ventspils city beach. In 1999 the Ventspils city beach was the
first in the Baltic States to receive the Blue flag. From the
moment Latvia got involved in the Blue flag movement, Ventspils
beach has received the prestigious Blue flag every year. The
festival for the raising of the Blue Flag on Ventspils beach will
happen on the International Environment Day – the 5th of
June. The Blue Flag program is one of five international
environmental organisation Foundation for Environmental Education
(FEE) programs in the field of eco-certification and environmental
education. The beaches to get the Blue flag eco-certificate need to
match 29 strict criteria in the fields of water quality,
environmental management, environmental information and education,
as well as in the fields of facilities, services and safety. The
campaign for the Latvian Blue Flag is being implemented by the
Foundation for Environmental Education in collaboration with the
Ministry of Environment and Latvian Environment Protection
Foundation.
