Conrad Kain -- Banff Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Scottie: Having checked the location it does appear that this cache has gone missing. It is somewhat ironic that I need to archive this cache on its 13th birthday since the day it was originally set.

In thirteen years it has been visited some 5,400 times which has been reassuring to me. It was the first geocache set in the Banff townsite which had official permission. It was set to honour an important mountain guide who is also given prominence at the nearby Museum. Happy trails Conrad!

I hope someone, who lives somewhat closer, is able to replace this with another cache to honour this great fellow.

Thanks to everyone from far and wide, from many different countries, who visited this cache over the past 13 years. I have appreciated your comments and photos.

Geocache Description:

This is one of a series of internationally placed caches to honour renowned mountaineer Conrad Kain.

About this Cache Area...

The Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies welcomes those who are drawn to the power and inspiration of these mountains. The museum is the gateway for experiencing and enjoying its art, culture and history in order to inspire and cultivate knowledge and the exchange of ideas. The Museum becomes the launch pad for discovering the Canadian Rockies, where people are engaged in the excitement of exploring Canadian Rockies art, culture and history.

Mountaineer Conrad Kain befriended the Canadian Rockies’ premiere natural and human history photographer Byron Harmon (who took most of the striking photos of Kain in the biographical book “Where the Clouds Can Go” with his heavy 5x7 Graphic View camera).

Harmon’s photos of Kain, and his era, are found in both the archival section of the museum, and amongst various permanent and temporary exhibits in the galleries.

The cache is hidden in the grounds of the museum so is available at all times. The Museum building is open for 363 days of the year so you are encouraged to visit to see the displays and archives if you have the time to do so.
