Geocache Description:

All Saints, Gussage All Saints

A brook runs through the Gussages, All Saints, St. Michael and St. Andrew. Gussage All Saints, the largest, has a church mostly new, but three old bells hang in the 14th century tower.

The chancel was rebuilt in 1860. The tower has been built in three stages, the top is 15th century addition in stone, the middle stage has bands of flint and stone, the lower stage is flint. There is an ornate 14th century Easter sepulchre. The 14th century font is of Purbeck marble.

The interior is impressive with a very lofty feel and a beautiful roof. The restoration by the architect, Ewan Christian, involved moving the original chancel arch to the north wall in order to form a frame for the organ. The present chancel arch was installed by the eminent Dorchester architect, John Hicks, who had Thomas Hardy as a pupil before he became an author.

There are excellent guide boards in the church and it is well worth a visit.

Walk into the graveyard to see the view.

To find the cache look at the cross-shaped grave near the unusual capped churchyard wall, opposite the porch. Thomas Humb(y) born May AB CDEF. Died May G HJKL. The cache can be found at: N50 53.(E+G)(A+D)K W002 00.(F-E)(L-F)F+A)
