Philippi Traditional Geocache
erik88l-r: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. Philippi
Philippi (Philippoi) was established by the king of Macedon, Philip II in 356 BC, on the site of the Thasian colony of Krinides or Crenides, near the head of the Aegean Sea at the foot of Mt. Orbelos about 8 miles north-west of Kavalla, on the northern border of the marsh that in Antiquity covered the entire plain separating it from the Pangaion hills to the south of Greece.
The city remained despite its modest size of perhaps 2000 people. Almost nothing is known about the city in this period, aside from the walls, the Greek theatre, the foundations of a house under the Roman forum and a little temple dedicated to a hero cult. This monument covers the tomb of a certain Exekestos, is possibly situated on the agora. In AD 49 or 50, the city was visited by the apostle Paul who was guided there by a vision (Acts 16:9-10).
The archaeological site of Philippi lies on either side of Highway 12; it is best to begin your visit on the south side, across the highway from the ticket booth. The entrance leads right onto a section of the Via Egnatia, the main east-west road through the city. The road was built by the Romans, but over top of an earlier Hellenistic road.
Adjacent to the road is the Roman forum, the administrative center of Philippi. On the west side was a temple, probably dedicated to Antoninus Pius as part of the imperial cult. Other temples surround the forum as well. South of the forum is Commercial Road, which was lined with shops. There are still games engraved in the floor.
The Cache
The cache is hidden behind the marmor stone you can see on photo 8.
I ‘d like to notice that this cache is not supposed to be approached from inside the archaeological area. I do not know if this is allowed to be approached from inside, but for sure it’s easier to reach it from outside the fence, it's just 50 cm away from the fence and you can easily get it from outside.

Φίλιπποι
Από τους πιο σημαντικούς και με την λαμπρότερη ιστορία αρχαιολογικούς χώρους του νομού, είναι οι Φίλιπποι που υπήρξαν μια από τις σημαντικότερες πόλεις της Ανατολικής Μακεδονίας και της Θράκης. Η περιοχή των Φιλίππων, κατοικήθηκε από την νεολιθική εποχή, γεγονός που πιστοποιεί ένας συνοικισμός που βρέθηκε δύο χιλιόμετρα ανατολικά από την πόλη των Φιλίππων. Η φήμη της πόλης απλώνεται παγκοσμίως το 42 π.χ. χάρη στην κοσμοϊστορική μάχη των Φιλίππων που έγινε έξω από τα τείχη της και το αποτέλεσμά της αποτέλεσε σταθμό για την ιστορία των Φιλίππων, αφού Ρωμαίοι άποικοι εγκαθίστανται και την μετατρέπουν σε μια τελείως Ρωμαϊκή πόλη.
Μάρτυρες της λαμπρής εποχής που έζησαν οι Φίλιπποι είναι το Αρχαίο Θέατρο, χτισμένο στους πρόποδες του λόφου της ακρόπολης, γύρω στο 356 π.χ., οι διαστάσεις του οποίου το κατατάσσουν σε ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα αρχαία θέατρα. Όσον αφορά την πόλη, ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον παρουσιάζουν το Forum, μια τετράγωνη πλατεία στρωμένη με πλάκες μαρμάρου, που περιλαμβάνει οικοδομές και ναούς και η Εμπορική Αγορά, ένα μεγάλο οικοδόμημα που χτίστηκε στην Ρωμαϊκή εποχή και συγκέντρωνε όλη την εμπορική κίνηση της πόλης. Τα αγάλματα και τα τιμητικά μνημεία που υπήρχαν εδώ, αλλά και τα χαραγμένα παιχνίδια, μαρτυρούν πόσο πολυσύχναστος ήταν ο χώρος της αγοράς.
Εδώ ο Απόστολος Παύλος διδάσκει το μήνυμα του Χριστιανισμού για πρώτη φορά στην Ευρώπη (49μ.Χ.)και βαπτίζει στον ποταμό Ζυγάκτη την πρώτη Ευρωπαία χριστιανή την Λυδία. Συλλαμβάνεται, φυλακίζεται με τον Σίλλα, γίνεται μεγάλος σεισμός, κάτι που κάνει τον δεσμοφύλακα να ασπασθεί την καινούργια πίστη και να τους απελευθερώσει.
Η Κρύπτη
Η κρύπτη είναι κρυμμένη πίσω από το μάρμαρο που βλέπετε στην φωτογραφία 8. Ξέχασα να συμπληρώσω το First to Find Award (στοιχεία κρύπτης, ημερομηνία κλπ), οπότε παρακαλώ συμπληρώστε το μόνοι σας.
