[ENG] Roja Sea Fishery Museum. The history of Roja museum

enthusiast Livija Šteinbauma performed the first activities
of organizing the museum.
According to September 18, 1968 decision of Talsu region executive
committee, urban village most active members founded the public
fishery museum in Roja
At the beginning the museum collection was stored in the so called
Roja poorhouse in Miera Street. On July 12, 1969 a permanent
exhibition of exhibits was set up in Roja recreation center. The
history of Roja and the neighboring villages and in particular the
development of fishery was reflected there.
At the befinning of 1970 the premises of Roja urban village
executive committee fell vacant in 8, Liepu Street and they were
committed to the care of the museum.
After refurbishing on May 28, 1971 the museum opened its doors
to the visitors with a permanent exposition. Roja Sea Fishery
Museum became a filiation of Talsi Local History and Art Museum.
The first head of the museum was Livija Šteinbauma, who set
up and administrated the museum from 1968 to 1992.
From 1992 Roja Sea Fishery Museum is situated in 33 Selgas Street
in the office of the former Roja fishermen's co-operative
association ”Stalina celš”, built in 1954.
From 1961 to 1966 Roja elementary school functioned in this
building, after that the dormitories of Ventspils vocational school
filiations were located there.
At present 25 792 items are stored in the storage facilities of
the museum, a part of them is located in six exposition halls,
telling the visitors about the fishermen’s life and work on
North Kurzeme seacoast, Krišjanis Valdemars’ naval
schools and the age of sailing-vessels at the end of the 19th and
the beginning of the 20th century. The largest hallo f the museum
tells the visitors about coastal fishery, fish processing from the
beginning of the century till 1940, as well as about the history of
the fishermen’s collective farm ,,Banga”.
You can get an insight in the culture and craft of the fisher
villages in the museum (1900-1940)
Permanent museum expositions are set up and improved. Exhibitions
periodically change in the exhibition halls – paintings,
needlework, ceramics, and plants.
The staff of the museum carries out educational work –
organizes and conducts excursions, discussions, lectures, gives
information to pupils, students and other interested persons.
Visitors give approval for the expositions of the museum, noting
the peculiarity and the uniqueness of the exhibits.
We are truly happy and proud of the amazement of the visitors of
the museum abut the fact that there can exist a museum so rich in
the rural municipality. We give information on the latest news

Talsi district” have been prepared and published. A new
