Geocache Description:

ULVA
A world apart

One of a series of caches placed on Ulva during 2010, to celebrate 10 years of geocaching.

Ulva is a privately owned island with a thriving community of fewer than 20 people who are involved variously in sheep and cattle farming, fish farming, oyster farming and tourism.

The cache is located near a monument overlooking the abandoned village of Ormaig. It is a round-trip walk of 6 miles to reach Ormaig from the ferry.

Ormaig

Popular opinion claims that Ormaig is the birthplace of Major-General Lachlan MacQuarrie, the Governor General of New South Wales in Australia, who now lies buried in a mausoleum at Gruline. But the memorial at Ormaig is not quite so adamant.

You get to Ulva by ferry from mainland Mull (foot passengers only, and mountain bikes), Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm (0900-1700) on demand; also open Sundays from 1st June to end of August, but closed all day Saturday.
