Geocache Description:

First cache in the CHW series and also a possible driveby. The hardest in the series, please take care when attempting this one!

Welcome to the Charlesworth, Chisworth and Broadbottom Heritage Walk (CHW) series of caches. There are 7 possible finds during a 3 mile walk taking in some lesser visited picturesque woods and some industrial heritage of the area. Please note that this walk is generally easy going but there are some tricky sections of path and the walk will be slippy and muddy in places dependant on the weather. You should be able to follow the walk using the given directions but it is advised to bring a OS map and to check the route first.

Park at the co-ordinates provided. The car park doesn’t belong to the church although they recently had it surfaced and will be full during the main service times, in particular on a Sunday morning. If this car park is unavailable cross the bridge into Broadbottom, take the second left and park at the Lymefield Visitor Centre where there is an overflow car park next left after the centre if needed. The directions provided assume you have parked at the church. I recommend allowing at least 2 to 3 hours for the walk to allow time to look at the points of interest on route, and please note some hides are a little more difficult and intended to be a bit more of a challenge.

CHW NAVIGATION to CHW01 (Quarry Capers): Park opposite the Church of the Immaculate Conception at the bottom of Long Lane. Look for a little path at the north end of the car park. Take this and it quickly brings you onto the TPT path. Turn left and head down through the old quarry. Check your GPS for the cache details.

HISTORY: During the industrial years the car park was actually a row of terraced houses know as ‘New York’. They would have housed local mill workers. The quarry would have provided stone possibly for mill, viaduct and the road support construction. Bankswood Mill was located a little further up the valley beyond the viaduct and was only demolished in the 1990s. The viaduct was constructed to carry the main Manchester – Sheffield Woodhead line and the extra brick supports were added when the line was electrified in the 1950s. The Woodhead line closed in the early 1980s and now terminates at Glossop.

DETAILS: This can also be completed as a drive by, the same car park is recommended. Note the difficulty level on this cache. This is the hardest one to reach of the series and care should be taken, especially if attempted in the wet or at night. You attempt this one at your own risk. It is not however excessively high and does not involve any significant height gain.
