Geocache Description:


A traditional micro sized geocache near Tampere/Pirkkala airport terminal 1.


Pirkkala is a town of 16 000 inhabitants right next to the city of Tampere (over 200 000 inhabitants) situating in the area south of Lake Pyhäjärvi. The area of Pirkkala is about 81,5 sq. kilometers. The distance by road from Pirkkala is 10 km to Tampere, 150 km to Turku and 175 km to Helsinki, the capital. The traffic connections from and to Pirkkala are favourable because of the airport, motorways and waterways. The nearest railway station is in Tampere within easy reach by bus.

In spite of Pirkkala being small in area it has a lot of unspoiled nature and forests in addition long coast line with lake Pyhäjärvi. Pirkkala offers marvellous opportunities for water sports, picnicking and hiking.

Oldest archaeological findings in the Pirkkala area are from Stone Age. The name of the parish of Pirkkala is recorded for the first time in written sources as late as 1374. In 1938 the municipality Pirkkala began its modern local self-government.

In 1862 a special variety of birch, the birch of Pirkkala (Betula pendula f. bircalensis) was found by scientists as a new subspecies in Pirkkala. The lobed leaf of the birch of Pirkkala has become one of the symbols of Pirkkala.

Airport activities started 1979, when terminal 2 was publicly opened. Terminal 1 was build 1996 and it become the main building for the airport.

Pirkkalassa on noin 16 000 asukasta ja se on yksi Tampereen naapurikunnista. Pirkkalan pinta-ala on 81.5 neliökilometriä. Pirkkalasta on matkaa Tampereelle 10 km, Turkuun 150 km ja Helsinkiin 175 km. Pirkkalan liikenneyhteydet ovat erinomaiset lentokentän, moottoritien ja Pyhäjärven vesireittien ansiosta. Lähin rautatieasema on Tampereella.

Vaikka Pirkkalan kunta ei ole pinta-alaltaan kovin suuri, on siellä paljon rakentamatonta luontoa ja pitkä ranta-viiva Pyhäjärveen, siksi kunta tarjoaakin erinomaiset mahdollisuudet ulkoiluun, retkeilyyn ja vesiurheiluun.

Vanhimmat arkeologiset löydöt Pirkkalan alueelta ovat peräisin kivikaudelta. Nimi Pirkkala esiintyi ensimmäisen kerran teksteissä vuonna 1374. Pirkkalan kunta on ollut olemassa nykyisessä koossaan nykyisellä nimellä vuodesta 1938.

Pirkkalan alueelta löydettiin vuonna 1862 erikoinen koivulajike, joka sai nimekseen Pirkkalan koivu (Betula pendula f. bircalensis). Sen lehdestä on tullut yksi kunnan symboleista.

Lentokenttä vihittin käyttöön 1979, kun terminaali 2 avattiin. Terminaali 1 rakennettiin 1996, jolloin siitä tuli kentän pääterminaali.
