mr panda: This cache has clearly reached its sell by date. Fun while it lasted, but a bit far for me to properly maintain.

On November 7th 1497, about 170 men, on four ships (The São Gabriel, The São Rafael, The Berrio, and a storage ship), led by de Gama arrived in St. Helena Bay. It was a Tuesday. They had just spent the last three months in open ocean traveling from Sierra Leone (see the red line on the map). Of course, this wasn't named St. Helena Bay at the time, they dubbed it so after the mother of the Roman Emperor, Constantine the Great.
Da Gama and his crew hung out with the locals for about 5 days or so before pushing off on their way to Calicut.
In addition to this monument, apparently there is also a Vasco Da Gama Nautical Museum in town, but I have not been. If you pop by, let us know if it is worth the time!
