Geocache Description:

This 1.6 mile round trip hike to the cache is along a desert trail that is sometimes hard to follow, but marked by several signs.

In lieu of removing this cache completely (since it is within the borders of the Saguaro National Park), I've decided to convert the cache to a virtual cache. To confirm your visit, please e-mail me the text found in the center of the marker disk (not the text about the fine...) at jscotti@pirl.lpl.arizona.edu and then log your find.

From the intersection of Golden Gate Road and Sandario road, take Golden Gate Road (which is a dirt road that can be traversed by any kind of car - NOTE: you could take the "long cut" past the Sus picnic ground along Who-Ka-Kam road, but that's another story...) about 3.5 miles to the Ez-Kim-In-Zin picnic ground. The desert horse/foot trail begins along the entry road into the picnic ground. Follow the Encinas trail along a wash and an abandoned dirt road. About 0.13 miles past where it intersects and follows the abandoned dirt road, you will find the area of the cache. The cache is a National Geodetic Survey Marker (CZ0717) that was placed here in 1935. It is about 25 feet SW of the trail.

For more information on National Geodetic Survey Markers, how to find them and how to contribute to their recovery, see my GPS website and follow the links to the NGS websites.

A cacher in search of a longer hike can take the Encinas trail from it's intersection with Sandario road (you may need a topo map to find this trail which follows the above mentioned abandoned dirt road for most of its length and is not identified on the topo map I have) about 2.8 miles to the cache. There are 2 other NGS markers that can be found along the trail (CZ0718 and CZ0720) and another along Sandario road across from the intersection of the abandoned road and Sandario Road (CZ0721). One can also park along Golden Gate Road at its intersection with the other end of the abandoned dirt road (there is a small pullout at that spot) and take a 0.45 mile hike to this geocache site - if you can find the dirt road. Yet another survey marker is along Golden Gate road near the Ez-Kim-In-Zin picnic ground if you'd like to bag them all (CZ0716). There are hundreds more in the Tucson area if you really want to get into it! I've bagged about 25 of them so far.
