Geocache Description:

Part of the Historical Holmfirth series. The others are: The

Would you believe it? A Tiger in Holmfirth? Well, it’s true and it’s a tale my late father was always pleased to recount as he was a child at the time that Fenella lived here.

Fenella was a Sumatran Tiger who was adopted by the Overends; a family of acrobats from Holmfirth who were touring with Boswell’s circus in South Africa. At the start of the Second World War, the Overends returned to Holmfirth and brought Fenella with them. The Tiger was a familiar and popular sight in the village as she was taken on walks and driven round in the back of their car. The memories of Fenella were fading as the residents of Holmfirth who knew and loved Fenella, passed away, so a project was launched to capture the memories in a book. ‘Memories of Fenella the Holmfirth Tiger, is on sale at Holmfirth Library. One of my favourite stories, and one that my father would often tell, is when Miss Overend was pestered by a door-to-door salesmen who would not leave. Miss Overend said she would call her tiger if he did not go, to which he laughed and carried on with his pitch. Then Fenella padded into view and the salesman fled!

Some keen cachers among you may notice a similarity with the name of Fenella’s owners and a well-loved local cacher!

Make sure you look at the photo of Fenella with the school children, and many thanks to Harry for adding a link to more photos of Fenella. This can be found in the log dated 24/04/10 by overanout.
