Geocache Description:

This cache was hidden as part of the Geocaching 10 years celebrations in Israel.
This cache is also part of the 10 Years series, ending with a puzzle cache. Visit that cache to learn about the area.

After finding the cache and logging your visit, do not forget to write down the codes you'll find on the cover inside - you will need them for the series final.

Some notes about letterbox hybrid

  • This is both letterbox and geocache. If you don't like the letterbox part, you may just sign the logbook, as in traditional cache.
  • The stamp and ink pillow (if included) are part of the cache and not trading items - don't take them!
  • To participate in the letterbox part, bring a personal logbook and stamp it with the cache stamp. Save it as a memorial for your visit in the cache and for the 10 years celebrations.
  • If you have your own personal stamp or stickers, stamp or stick it in the cache logbook, near your traditional log.
  • Bring an ink pillow with you. I can't leave it in the cache because it will get dry in the Israeli weather.
  • it not a must, but usually letterboxes hybrids involve both GPS clues, as used in Geocacaching and other types of clues which were used in letterboxing many years before the GPS era.

If you make this cache early, you will have the undoubtedly impressive achievement of finding all the Letterbox Hybrids in Israel!

Olive Oil Press

The olive tree and its oil have been major components in the culture and rituals of Ancient Israel and the economy of its inhabitants throughout history. Its prominent status is revealed by numerous verses in the Old Testament, the Mishnah and the Talmud. There are archological evidences for olive oil press in Israel as early as the 6th millenium BCE.

This oil press is an example of the traditional method of olive oil extraction. This one is from the 2nd temple days or from the Byzantine period. It was used to prepare olive oil from the many olive trees in the valley.

First, the olives were ground into an olive paste using large millstones. A large round stone (referred to as a yam) was placed on ground upon which a millstone (referred to as a memel) was placed. It was customary to harness an animal to the axle of the millstone which would turn the stone and thereby crush the olives.

After crushing and breaking them, the olive pulp was brought for pressing in aqalim (baskets woven of coarse fabric or ropes). The aqalim were squeezed in a press and the olive oil was extracted as a result of this action. The baskets served as a filter whereby the liquid dripped out leaving the pits and pulp waste behind in the baskets.

Where is the cache?

  1. In the posted coordinates you will find a sculpture, called "The struggle". In the sculpture, find a hole.
  2. Go behind the sculpture and look into the hole. Identify the point you see through the hole.If you are two people or more, one can look in the hole and direct the other, until he show the right point. If you are alone, put some object and look on it from the hole, until you see the object in the right place. You can also try to use a laser pointer - be careful not to look into it.
  3. Go from the sculpture toward the direction of the above point, 5 times the distance from the sculpture to the point (bypass the bushes).
  4. Now you should be near the cache, but since it can't be very accurate, here is additional hint: Find a right angle triangle on a T on an O on another O. The cache is behind the right angle of the triangle.
  5. The cache is a 180ml L&L container. It contains the stamp and logbook - no place for trading items.
