Geocache Description:

I have had an interest in cup and ring stones for a number of years now and since acquiring a GPS I find it much easier to locate them.
There is an excellent book on the subject: Prehistoric Rock Art in Northumberland by Stan Beckensall and there are two web sites worth investigating: The Stan Beckensall web archive (visit link) and the England Rock Art (ERA) site (visit link)
The co-ordinate system used on the Beckensall site is (Eastings,Northings) which I cannot fathom but the ERA site uses the much easier British National Grid.
Weetwood Moor has a number of important cup & ring stones but my favourites are Weetwood 3a and Weetwood 6 (Beckensall classification). See the attached photographs. Their co-ordinates are shown in the table below and they are both worth a visit.
