Geocache Description:

"Sumava" is a large mountain area in the SW of Bohemia, creating a natural border between Austria and Germany. The "Sumava" ridge forms a water-shed between the Black Sea and the German Ocean. "Sumava" was created during the alpine buckling and on the Czech side it is a flat country with a vast moorland and continuously rising saddles and with stream valleys formed by erosion.

The "Jezerni" fen, sometimes also called the "Kvildska" fen is located in the elevation of 1058 - 1075m and it is a part of the "Sumava" national park. The moorland was formed in the post-glacial era on granite foundation. The "Jezerni" fen is a watershed divide kind of moorland. The smaller part is drained into "Vydra" river by the "Hamersky" brook and the rest into "Vltava" river by the "Kvildsky" brook. It is located 2km SE from "Horska Kvilda" and 3km from "Kvilda" belonging to the territory of "Kvilda" municipality. The fen's acreage is 103.5 hectares in the altitude of 1057 - 1075m with the maximum peat thickness of 7 -8m. The annual average temperature is around 1C with regularly recorded temperature lows in that area. The fen got its name after a small lake which is currently overgrown by moss. There are many plants that are very rare in the Central Europe such as : dwarf birch, hare's - tail, dwarf mountain pine and many others. Among the rare animals are :moorcock, northern lynx and northern birch mouse. In the 19th and 20th century the right side of the moorland was drained and partially mined. The mining was stopped in 1933 when the area was declared a reservation. Even today, however, the consequences of the mining are evident : for example the lack of dwarf-pine growth in certain areas of the fen. Since 1934 the fen has been protected as a natural reservation with 34 hectares. At the present time the area is part of zone 1 of the "Sumava" national park and its acreage reached 120 hectares. In 1974 a short natural trail was established here with a 120m long pathway leading into the middle of the moorland where a 7m high, freely accessible view- tower was built. From its top you can see the bigger part of the fen which is closed to public.

Z teto veze si muzeme prohlednout vetsi cast Jezerní slate, ktera neni pristupna verejnosti.
