Kakushöhle

Ein großer Kalkstein, der Kartstein, überragt hier das Tal. Diese auffällige Felsformation ist etwa 300.000 Jahre alt und stammt aus dem Mittelpleistozän. Mit seinen großen Höhlen handelt es sich um ein besonderes geologisches und auch archäologisches Denkmal.
Der Kartsteinfelsen in Eiserfey ist ein wunderbares Beispiel eines solchen Travertins. Der Felsen wurde von einer starken. oberhalb gelegenen Karstquelle abgesetzt. Man muß sich auf der Höhe des Kartsteinfelsens kleine Seebecken vorstellen, die über große Kaskaden ins Tal abgeflossen sind.
Diese Travertinablagerungen stammen aus einer Warmzeit des Mittelpleistozäns vor etwa 200.000 - 300.000 Jahren. Danach ist der große Felsen aus Travertin also wesentlich jünger als die devonischen Gesteine, die noch am Boden der großen Höhle zu sehen sind. Neben dieser „Kakushöhle“ gibt es noch die so genannte „Kleine Höhle“.

Die Fragen und Aufgaben
Bitte begebt euch an die oben genannte Koordinate und folgt dem Rundgang.
- Frage 1: Welche beiden geschützten Tierarten (Fledermäuse) leben hier?
- Frage 2: Welchen Durchmesser hat der hier gefundene und abgebildete „Chopper“?
- Frage 3a und 3b: Abgebildet ist der Knochen eines hier in der letzten Eiszeit heimischen Tieres. Wie heisst dieses Tier und wie groß war es?
- Aufgabe 1: Begib dich in die „Kakushöhle“ und gehe die Treppe hinauf. Oben angekommen ragt rechts ein Fels herein. Wie breit ist hier der Durchgang auf dem Weg zu den hinteren Ausgängen (siehe Foto) auf ca. 200cm Höhe?
- Aufgabe 2: Begib dich in die „Kleine Höhle“. Genau in der Mitte siehst du an der Decke eine helle Stelle bzw. auch eine Öffnung (siehe Foto). Wie groß ist der von dir gemessene Abstand vom Boden zur Decke an dieser Stelle?

Kakushöhle
You are visiting an european protected area (“Flora-Fauna-Habitat-Scenery”). Please pay attention to all instructions displayed!
A big limestone, the “Kartstein”, is here towering above the valley. This eye-catching rock formation is about 300.000 years old and from the period of Middle-Pleistocene. With its big caves it is a geological and a archaeological benchmark.
This rock of calc-sinter at Eiserfey is a extraordinary example of such a travertine. The rock was decanted by a potent karstic spring sitting above. You have to imagine little lake basins on level of the calc-sinter. They flowed off into the valley through big cascades.
These sediments of travertine are dated back to a warm period of Middle-Pleistocene about 200.000 – 300.000 years ago. Based on this, the big rock of travertine is very much younger than the devonic stone you can see on the bottom of the big cave. In addition to this “Kakushöhle” there is a so called “Kleine Höhle”.

Questions and exercises

- Question 1: Which two kinds of protected species of bats are living here?
- Question 2: What is the diameter of the here located and pictured „Chopper“?
- Question 3a and 3b: Pictured is the bone of an animal which was living here during the last ice age. What is the name of this animal and how tall was it?
- Exercise 1: Go into the „Kakushöhle“ and go upstairs. A few steps further on the right-hand side a rock extends into your way. Of what width is the passageway at this position (on a height of ca. 200cm) on your way to the rear exits of the cave (see photograph)?
- Exercise 2: Go into the „Kleine Höhle“. Close to the middle you can see a white spot respectively a loophole (see photograph) at the ceiling. What height is the cave from the bottom to the ceiling at this position?
