Lovely view from the top of Stanley Park in Akaroa. Steep walk for approx 1/2 an hour from the French landing memorial site (French flag on flagpole) on the foreshore. Up a track which starts next door to the Fire Station.
Searching takes you on a well-marked track (no bush-bashing necessary) from the Akaroa foreshore to the highest point in Stanley Park with a panoramic view of the township and its magnificent harbour setting. The signposted track begins near the site where the colonising French settlers landed in 1840 and climbs through mainly parkland and ends at a style in a fence on Stanley Park's highest boundary. The park is named after Captain Owen Stanley of HMS "Britomart" who, on 11 August 1840, proclaimed the first act of British sovereignty, three days before the French colonists arrived. Coordinates for the French memorial: S 43 48.497 E 172 57.829. Coordinates for the start of the walking track: S 43 48.495 E 172 57.908. Track begins next to the Fire Station across the road from the French memorial. An interesting way back down to the township is over the style marked Watson Street. Cache is a small clear snap-lock container. Please replace the lid carefully. Stanley Park is Christchurch City Council land. Any sheep are used to keep the grass down. Walkers are welcome. NB: Rue Charbonnier shows on the Google Map but doesn't exist.
