Geocache Description:

St Michael, Up Marden.
An easy cache that can be done as part of The Stoughton Stumble Series, if you have time

The whole church is thirteenth century. The church has two chancel arches; the lower one is original, while the higher one is the remains of a later, abandoned, attempt to raise the arch. The painting of a huge mediaeval St Christopher can just be seen on the North wall of the nave and there are remains of other 13th century wall paintings. It is, however, not so much the architecture, which is not dissimilar to many other churches in Sussex, as the unrestored atmosphere and the accumulation of fittings from thirteenth century font to Victorian pulpit, that makes Up Marden memorable. It now features in Simon Jenkins' book, 'England's Thousand Best Churches'.
Because it has no electricity, services are only held here in the Summer, when Evensong is sung twice a month on the second and fourth Sundays.

If anybody would like to expand this series please do, I would just
ask that you could let sadexploration know first so he can keep
track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication
