SideTracked - Budapest Southern Railway Station Traditional Geocache

History

The railway station was inaugurated by the Austrian owned Southern Railway Company in 1861. The building was considered a well equipped station, same as the other busy railway stations controlled by the Company. There was a wooden pavilion above the rails. The station was named after the Company in 1873 and not after it’s location in the city. The building and the rails were totally destroyed in the Second World War. Temporary facilities served the passengers until the sixties. The reconstructions started in 1960 by the plans of architect György Kovári. The whole complex was finished by 1975. The architect received the Ybl-award (the most honourable award in Hungary for architects) for this project.

Története

A pályaudvart 1861-ben adták át az osztrák tulajdonú Déli Vasút saját budai végállomásaként. Az épület a vasúttársaság más forgalmas pályaudvaraihoz hasonlóan komolyan felszereltnek számított, és egy facsarnokkal bírt a vasúti sínek felett. A Déli pályaudvar nevet 1873-ban kapta az állomás, nem a földrajzi fekvésérol, hanem a vasúttársaságról. A létesítményt a második világháború során teljesen lebombázták, a befutó vasútvonalak is tönkrementek. Egészen az 1960-as évekig ideiglenes létesítmények szolgálták az utasokat. Végül 1960-ban Kovári György építész tervei alapján megindult a pályaudvar rekonstrukciója. A teljes épületkomplexum 1975-re készült el. Az építész ezen munkájáért kapta az Ybl-díjat.
