The Esseg Castle

The castle must have been built between 1279 and 1309, when it became the property of the Lőrinc Genus, relative to the Wigman. With the exception of some interruptions the tenure was in the ownership of the Segvári or Essegvári family until the 16th century.
In 1330, The Essegváris even got the right from the king to take the toll around the castle and near Billege.
"Esseg" Castle not only functioned as the home of the landholder family but as the centre of the tenure as well. The lords started their raids from this point and returned here.
Esseg catle - for a short period - was indeed a royal castle after 1401, then István Rozgonyi sub-prefect of Bakony-received it as a pawn from King Zsigmond the king who always pinched for money.
The castle unfortunatelly was not mentioned in the 16-century-Turkish wars. It was presumably destroyed during the first siege of nearby Veszprém in 1552. It was already mentioned as a ruin in 1641.
The ruined castle is currently being under renovation. Local persons told, they continously angle for money and sometimes they get a few, whereof can build up some rocks. They planned to put right the castle and the surrounding, because it allure more visitors. They whisper: a look-out tower is planned here.

Valószínűleg 1279 és 1309 között épülthetett, első említését csak 1309-ből ismerjük, amikor az Igmándokkal rokon Lőrinte nemzetség birtokába került. Ettől kezdve, kisebb-nagyobb átmeneti megszakításokkal, a Lőrinte nembéli Segvári vagy Essegvári család bitokolta, egészen a 16. század elejéig-közepéig.
Az Essegváriak 1330-ban megkapták a vár alatti és a Billege melletti vámszedés jogát is a kiráyltól.
Essegvár a birtokos család lakóhelyeként és birtokközpontjaként szolgált. Innen indultak ki és ide tértek vissza környékbeli portyáikról, hatalmaskodásaikból.
1401 után rövis iedig királyi vár is volt, majd Rozgonyi István bakonyi ispán zálogbirtokba kapta a folytonos pénzzavarral küszködő Zsigmond királytól.
Essegvár a 16. század török háborúiban már nem szerepelt, feltehetően a közeli Veszprém 1552-es első török ostromakor pusztulhatott el. 1641-ben romként említették.
A várrom jelenleg felújítás alatt áll; a helybéliek elmesélték, folyamatosan pályaznak, időnként jutnak is egy kis pénzhez, amibol mindig "néhány követ fel tudnak rakni". Terveik között szerepel a vár és környékének olyan szintű rendbehozatala, amely még több látogatót vonzana. Nagyon halkan mondták: egy kilátót is terveznek ide.
