As the story goes, the original container was an ammo can, and it was put in place not long after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Someone noticed an "ammo can in the woods" and notified the police, who then came out with their bomb squad and detonated the ammo can thinking it had explosives in it! Not sure if that's all true, but it sure makes for a good story! The container has changed some over the years, but it is now an ammo can once again.
Don't let the D/T rating stop you from finding this cache! It was probably much harder when it was first placed, and you know how things can change over the years. It is a very easy walk almost all the way to the cache, and the ammo can is hidden about 20 feet off the main trail with no bushwhacking required. I have been here several times and haven't seen any thorns or poison ivy so those items shouldn't be an issue. However, I can't say the same thing about mosquitoes! Also, it is very close to the La Porte golf course so please use your stealth skills when looking for the container and when closing the ammo can. On my last trip here I could hear golfers teeing off and watched as a golf cart drove down the cart path!
If you choose to do so there is also parking just off South Broadway Street that can be found here: N29 38.677 W095 01.140, and there will be an entrance to the trail near there as well. That would be a shorter walk but to me it's not as enjoyable.
