St Nicholas Church dates from the mid 15th Century. The tower is
original, but the knave and chancel were re-built in the
1840’s.
The stone for the tower came from a nearby quarry at
Shaftesbury.
Of interest, but not connected with the cache: The oldest grave
is that of Mary Cock who died in 1759, having been born in 1690. It
will be found close to the tower in the South West, round to the
right as you come out of the porch. Standing with your back to the
porch, you will see the Portman family plot some 20 yards away. The
Portmans held land in Bryanston from 1660, but bought the estate of
Durweston in 1771. Most of their land was lost to death duties in
the 1920s.
To find the cache, first find memorial to the memory of Victor
Gray, ABCD-EFGH
The cache is located at N 50.52.(G-A-E) D A W 002.12.ABD
The cache contains only a log book, please take a pencil or pen
to record your visit.
If anybody would like to expand this series please do. We would
just ask that you contact sadexploration first so he can keep track
of the Church numbers and names and to avoid duplication.
Congratulations to Pete1970 - FTF!
