Geocache Description:

Located on the grounds of the Simeon Perkins Museum

Simeon Perkins was born in Norwich, Connecticut and moved to Liverpool in 1762 as part of the New England Planter migration. He immediately started in business trading for fish and lumber which he sold in New England, Newfoundland, Europe and the West Indies. When war broke out between England and the colonies, Simeon, like most residents, remained neutral, owing to close family connections in New England.
The toll taken on local businesses, by American warships capturing local vessels, caused many to shift allegiance to the British cause. After an attempted looting of the town by an Amerhcan ship, Perkins and a few others outfitted a ship and received a Letter of Marque and became privateers.
Simeon Perkins owned or partnered in many privateers that sailed from Liverpool, some with great success. One, the brig Rover, was said to be so successful preying on shipping near Cape cod, that the Cape Cod Canal was built to protect shipping from having to transit around the Cape, where privateers waited.
Simeon Perkins was also active in public life, serving in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1765-1768 and again from 1770-1799. all together he held 27 public positions, none of which paid a salary.
With all of this, Simeon Perkins is best know for the diary that he kept form 1766-1812 near his death. The diary contains a wealth of information on life in this era and records deaths, births and marriages,as well as ship sailings and arrivals. The diary is on display in the Museum which is open year round. You can also tour the original house from June to October.
