Geocache Description:

Media Release: "ACTPLA technology provides ‘wine cork’ accuracy"!

But will it find the Geocacher’s lost lipstick?

The ACT Planning and Land Authority has installed new GPS technology on the adjacent building that will give ‘wine-cork’ accuracy to Canberra users.

The system is known as Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) and is already in demand from surveyors, engineers and others needing to work with an accuracy of centimetres.

The information provided by CORS gives the user horizontal accuracy to two centimetres and vertical accuracy to four centimetres – the size of a wine cork!

Normal GPS gives an accuracy of 2-10 metres; however, by also using the satellite signals from a CORS, transmitted via the internet, the accuracy is greatly improved.

The CORS continuously logs satellites signals and feeds them to the NSW Land and Property Management Authority, which processes the signals and makes them available in real-time to CORSnet-NSW subscribers, who need appropriate receiving equipment.

During office hours you will need to be extra stealthy!

Good luck! Bring a pen.
