Sir John McKenzie rose from the rank's of the common man to fight for the common man so that they could become farmer's in their own right.
Born in Scotland in 1838 he migrated to New Zealand in 1860.He first worked as a shepherd for Johnny Jones.
In 1865 he entered into politic's working his way through various offices entering the House of Representatives in 1881 and becoming Minister of Lands in 1891 where he made his big mark in New Zealand history developing the Department of Agriculture in 1892,The Lands Act and The Land for Settlement Acts which allowed for the subdivision of large estates so that the small farmer could make a start on the land.
Ill health led to his resignation in 1900.He was knighted in 1901 on the Royal Train near his home and died a few weeks later.
A memorial cairn was erected on nearby Pukeiwitahi in 1902 but this collasped in 1918.The present cairn was erected on Puketapu in 1931.
