Geocache Description:

A typical Cape truncated-cone tower mill alongside the M3. You do not need to go inside the property to retrieve the cache.

Mostert's Mill was built in 1796 by Gysbert van Reenen on his farm Welgelegen. It was the first privately owned windmill in the Cape due to the fact that before the Battle of Muizenberg in 1795 which resulted in the British occupation of the Cape, all windmills were built and taxed in flour by the Dutch East India Company.

It ceased operating by 1873. The Mill became derelict with all the wooden machinery deteriorated. Sun, rain and wind took their toll on the windmill's exposed timbers. Insects of many species colonized the inner workings and weakened the timbers to the point of collapse.

The windmill was first renovated in 1936 and operated periodically until the outbreak of war in 1939. In 1986, many years of neglect caused the wind-shaft to break and the sails fell to the ground.

In 1995 the windmill was restored again. Retired Merchant Navy Captain Wallace-Bradley was the prime motivator for the restoration.

The Friends of Mostert's Mill runs the mill once a month - weather dependent.

Please keep your log entry as small as possible.
