Geocache Description:

What:The Great Northern Tier Geocaching Tournament - Pioneer Valley
Where: Crossroads, Palmer, MA
When: August 21st, 2010
Time: Sunrise to 4pm

Overview

The annual geocaching tournament has departed from the Northern Tier this year to give you a little flavor of the Valley. The event will take place largely in the south/central portion of the Pioneer Valley, and showcase the towns of Palmer, Monson, Brimfield, Sturbridge and Ware.

This year’s tournament will be a one day event, and incorporate some great suggestions from past organizers for this year’s event.

At the official event venue, we have rented a large pavilion with picnic tables. There is a restaurant and bar available with food and drink for lunch and dinner, but you can also bring your own food and drink (no outside alcohol).

What’s New – Rules, Changes, and Other Information

1.One day event – The 2010 tournament will be a one day event, allowing more people to come in and enjoy the event, without having to make overnight plans.

2.Pre-registration - Pre-registration and payment will be required by August 7th, 2010 for those who would like to receive the tournament program/cache list in electronic format, as well as a GPX file of all caches. This file will be made available via email to all registered attendees on August 20th, 2010 - the day before the tournament.

On site registration will be available from 8:00 am - 10:00 am at the official tournament site.

3.GPX file – a GPX file will be sent to all registered and paid participants on August 20th, so that teams may plan their optimum caching strategies ahead of time.

4. Optional sunrise start – all teams may start caching at sunrise on August 21st (6:03am), from any location that they deem appropriate – there is no need to come to the event headquarters prior to starting geocaching.

5.Cache Find Verification – Any team competing for the ‘most caches’ or ‘most points’ total may be required to furnish verification of a cache find either via a tracklog/GPX file of their day or via time-stamped photos, with a member of your team with the cache in question.

6. Scavenger Hunt - Bonus points will be give to those teams that find various items on their travels, and take a picture with a member of their team and the object in question. Any children that take part in the scavenger hunt will get to pick from the scavenger hunt prize bin.

7.Prizes
a.Awards will be given out for the 1st and 2nd place teams in two categories: most points, and most caches found
b.Raffle tickets will be given out to each registered team equally, not on a per point basis.
c.Random tokens – this year various caches will be visited during the day by volunteers, and tokens dropped in the caches. If you find one of these tokens, be sure to bring it with you to the scorers table to claim your prize.

8.Family friendly caches – if you’ve got kids with you who like to trade, focus on caches that are on the Trustees Properties – Peaked Mountain, the Rock House Reservation, Leadmine and Streeter – these locations will have caches that are stocked with swag, and the hides should be mostly kid-friendly.

9.Scoring – as in years past, scoring will be done via a scorecard that will be punched at each cache – the scorecard will be available in the program sent out via email on August 20th to all registered and paid attendees, as well as be available on the day of the event to those who register in person.
