Vigia da Baleia (0.750 Km - 15/20 min.)
Subir a Rua Direita (Rua Senador André de Freitas), a principal da Fajã Grande, até às última casas da Freguesia, do lado direito, entrando pelo carreiro que a elas conduz e que vai dar ao caminho pedestre para a Fajãzinha, Caldeira, Mosteiro e Lajedo (PR2FLO Fajã Grande - Lajedo). Pouco depois do inicio do trilho, à direita, uma canadinha entre paredes negras, estreita mas muito bem traçada (com o sinal VIGIA DA BALEIA a 280 metros a pé) conduz à chaminé vulcânica da vigia. O primeiro troço da subida à vigia é uma muito íngreme escada em pedra, mas após duas ou três voltas já aparece a meta, uma cabina empoleirada em cima de um rochedo, que se projecta sobre o mar. A segunda parte da vereda, porém, é muito menos empinada.
Uma vez ao pé da vigia, pode gozar do estupendo panorama, realmente «sem palavras».
O caminho é sempre mondado e bem transitável e até à passagem do milénio, a cabine hospedava a antena da televisão para a freguesia. Até então era sempre necessário que alguém da Junta de Freguesia acartasse uma bateria de carro às costas e subisse até à cabine, de três em três dias o mais tardar e com qualquer condição atmosférica, para fazer funcionar o retransmissor e não deixar a Fajã Grande sem sinal. Neste espectacular miradouro trabalhavam, na época da caça aos cachalotes, duas pessoas: quando o vigia, que perscrutava o mar, às vezes durante muitos dias, à espera do sopro dos cetáceos, os avistava, lançava-se um foguete, sinal para os baleeiros deixarem as suas actividades para preparar a saída dos botes baleeiros. Depois, enquanto o vigia não largava as baleias com o binóculo, o sinalizador estendia enormes panos brancos sobre a mata por baixo da cabine, espécie de grandes bandeiras que deviam indicar a direcção certa dos botes. A argúcia e a habilidade do sinalizador eram importantíssimas, porque devia manobrar os panos de maneira que pudesse enganar, com um código anteriormente estabelecido, a concorrência, ou seja, os barcos do Corvo, de Santa Cruz e das Lajes, sempre prontos no horizonte a interpretar as indicações da Fajã, para serem os primeiros a tombarem sobre a presa. Mais tarde, a utilização do rádio tornou desnecessária a sinalização.
Uma vez chegado à vigia da Baleia, tem de regressar pelo mesmo trilho uma vez que não há ligação.

The look-out post - Vigia da Baleia (0,750 Km - 15/20 min.)
Go up on the Rua Direita (Rua Senador André de Freitas), the main road of Fajã Grande, to the last houses of the Fajã on the right, entering the walking trail that leads to them and that will give way to Fajãzinha, Caldeira, Mosteiro and Lajedo (PR2FLO Fajã Grande - Lajedo). The first leg of the climb to the observation tower called "look-out post” is a very steep stone staircase, but after two or three times, you can see it, a cabin perched on a rocky outcrop which projects over the sea. The second part of the trail is not as difficult as the first part.
Once near it, you can enjoy the amazing view.
The road is always passable and well weeded.
Until the turn of the millennium, the look-out post housed a television antenna to the village. From three to three days it was necessary that someone from “Junta de Freguesia” carry a car battery on his back and climb up to the cabin, on all weather conditions, to operate the relay and not leave Fajã Grande without television signal.
In this spectacular viewpoint worked at the time of hunting Sperm whale, two people.
