The Roque Nublo is one of the greatest landmarks on the island of Gran Canaria. With a height of 1817 meters the Roque Nublo is not the highest mountain on the island, the Pico de las Nieves is with a height of 1948 higher than the Roque Nublo, however he is with his finger-shaped rock monolith a particular attraction.
In the pre-Hispanic times was the mountain with its prominent rock a special state. It was a holy place for the indigenous people of Gran Canaria. It served them as a ritual place to make sacrifice to the sun-god. The rock bound deep in the earth but with the soaring monoliths
made this place to a mystical sanctuary.
The Roque Nublo is a remnant of a huge volcano. It`s the solidified magma in the vent of this volcano. The softer rock of the volcanic cone has been removed by erosion in the course of time. The harder rock of the volcanic vent remained standing and formed the bedrock. On the way to the Roque Nublo there is also a prominent rock formation called the Roque El Fraile. It is also composed of the same rock material and was eroded in the course of time. Right next to the Roque Nublo we see a monolith which is reminiscent of a frog, called Roque Rana.
We park at the well accessible parking area La Goleta at
N 27 57.943 / W 015 36.097 at the road GC-600. Here starts your walk to the Roque Nublo and you can study the information boards. Marker show you the well walkable way towards the plateau.
To log this earthcache answer the following questions and perform these conditions.
1. What is the material (kind of rock) of which the Roque Nublo consists!
2. What is the height of his finger-shaped monolith?
3. What kind of erosion is responsible for the genesis of Roque Nublo
4. Calculate the area of the little information board (Square centimeter) at the beginning of the pathway to the Roque Nublo.
5. (Optional) Take a picture of you and your GPS at the plateau nearby the listingkoordinates and post it in your log!
6. (Optional) Approaching the Roque Nublo, take another Picture and post it in your log!

Der Roque Nublo gilt als eines der hervorragenden Wahrzeichen der Insel Gran Canaria. Mit einer Höhe von 1817 Meter ist er zwar nicht der höchste Berg der Insel, der Pico de las Nieves ist mit 1948 Meter höher als der Roque Nublo, jedoch stellt er mit seinem fingerförmigen Gesteinsmonolithen eine besondere Attraktion dar.
In der vorspanischen Zeit hatte der Berg mit seinem markanten Monolithen eine besondere Stellung. Es war ein heiliger Ort für die Ureinwohner Gran Canarias. Er diente ihnen als Kultplatz um dem Sonnengott Opfer darzubieten. Die Felsen tief an die Erde gebunden jedoch mit dem in den Himmel ragenden Monolithen machten diese Stelle zu einem mystischen Ort.
Der Roque Nublo ist ein Überrest eines riesigen Vulkans. Es handelt sich um die im Kaminschlot dieses Vulkans erstarrte Magma. Das Weichere Gestein des Vulkankegels ist im Laufe der Zeit durch die Erosion abgetragen worden. Das härtere Gestein des Vulkanschlotes blieb hingegen stehen und bildete so das Felsmassiv. Auf dem Weg zum Roque Nublo findet sich eine markante Felsformation der sogenannte Roque El Fraile. Er besteht ebenfalls aus dem gleichen Gesteinsmaterial und im Laufe der Zeit hat auch hier die Erosion ganze Arbeit geleistet .Direkt neben dem Roque Nublo sehen wir noch einen an einen Frosch erinnernden Monolithen den Roque Rana.
Wir parken am gut zu erreichenden Parkplatz La Goleta bei
N 27 57.943 / W 015 36.097 an der Straße GC-600. Hier kann man die Infotafeln studieren. Wegweiser zeigen den gut begehbaren Weg zum Plateau.
Um den Earthcache zu loggen erfülle folgende Bedingungen.
1. Aus welchem Gesteinsmaterial besteht der Roque Nublo?
2. Wie hoch ist der auffallende fingerförmige Monolith?
3. Welcher Typ von Erosion ist für die Entstehung des Roque Nublo verantwortlich?
4. Berechne die Grundfläche der kleinen Infotafel (Quadratzentimeter) am Eingang des Weges zum Roque Nublo.
5. (Optional) Mach ein Bild von dir und GPS an den Listingkoordinaten mit dem Roque Nublo im Hintergrund.
6. (Optional) Nähere dich dem Roque Nublo und mach ein weiteres Bild an einer beliebigen Stelle.
Achtung: Ein Foto einzustellen ist freiwillig und keine Pflicht.Ich freue mich aber immer wieder über schöne Bilder.
