“The Chimney" stands 101 feet tall. Located at the outlet of Taylor Pond into Echo Lake, on route 41, it is one of Mt. Vernon's best known landmarks. Built in 1881, as part of a tannery started the previous year by Thomas French, the chimney was built at a cost of $14,000 (which was quite a tidy sum in those days). Evidently it was well worth the money, it has long outlasted the tannery it was built for, which was destroyed in a fire on Sept 19, 1912. That fire forever ended the tannery business in the town of Mt. Vernon.
The chimney had stood the test of time, but was showing its weather beaten face to the world with its falling down exterior until 1973, when the people of the town recognized its historical significance to the town and voted to have it restored to the condition you see it in today.
Also near or on this spot was a cooper shop (barrel makers), a shop which made wooden pumps, two stores across the road, a grist mill, a shingle maker, a blacksmith shop. So as you can see this place has been bustling with commerce since the dam was first placed here in 1790, by Captain Paul Blake.
Think for a moment while you retrieve this cache of all the things this chimney has seen…it’s seeing you get the cache too.
Quick park and grab. There is plenty of parking on either side of the road. Be very careful if you have to cross the road as the cars go very fast here. Be sure to bring your fishing rod with you as this is a good place to wet a line too.
