Geocache Description:

This cache was placed for the BIG HUNT preceding Microfest 2010.

The Giant African Bullfrog (Pyxiecephalus Adspersus Tschudi) is indigenous to Glen Austin, so much so, that it was featured on an overseas television show hosted by David Attenborough. There are wetlands within the Glen Austin borders and nearby - where this endangered species makes a home, and the major pan is a reserve.

The Bird Sanctuary is home to many birds and just a few spotted there have included Crimson Breasted Shrikes, Pied Barbit, Tit Babbler, Black Cuckoo Shrike whilst Crombeck and Bru Bru Shrikes, White and Abdims Storks, Black Headed Herons, Helmeted Guinea Fowl, Rock Pigeon and Black Crows have also been observed.

The list of ducks include the White Faced Ducks, various Teals, White Backed Duck, Lesser Moorhen and Cape Shoveller Ducks to name but a few.

A fish eagle was also spotted recently and a secretary bird was a regular visitor until 1995. Also spotted many years ago were Flamingos and Purple Gallinule.

Let's hope we see a Fish Eagle soon enough!

Although it is a very peaceful spot, please be cautious and keep an eye open with the people passing there as it is on the edge of a wide open veld.
