This cache is located near the top of Dumpling Hill in
Middlesex, Vermont. To find the cache, go to the cairn
located at the posted coordinates. Head 120 degrees magnetic for 75
yards or so. The cache is located under a 'grain of sand' deposited
during the last ice age.
There is no trail to the cache; it's forest hiking the whole
way. You can approach the cache from several different
locations but as always, please respect other people's land when
parking and hiking. The cache can be reached without passing
any "no trespassing" signs.
While you can drive to the cache from the Middlesex exit off
I-89, you'd probably be better off coming up Route 12 from
Montpelier, which is paved unlike many of the Middlesex town
roads. Take a left onto Shady Rill Road and follow it
to Macey Road/Wood Road (depending on which map you use, your map
may show one or the other coming first, but for all practical
purposes they're the same road for a few dozen yards).
Parking on Wood Road east of the cache generally seems to work
well.
Cache history: This cache was originally
placed by bigzig and wnt2w8lift, two Middlesex-area
cachers. They were no longer able to maintain it
themselves so various folks have taken care of it over the years,
as you'll see from log listings. A replacement
container was taken up in 2004 and was found to be leaking late in
the year, so Lemur took up an ammo box container in the spring of
2005 and adopted the cache. In January of 2006, BilboB adopted the
cache.
*****UPDATE April 22, 2006***** I just want to thank everyone who
has taken the time out to find this cache and to all who have yet
to find it. I will be deployed in support of the Global War on
Terrorism to Iraq for about 14 months. Darrel of DJ and Cal has
graciously agreed to adopt my caches and maintain them while I am
gone and I really appreciate that. Thanks everyone and see you next
year!
