On October 1, 2000 Jeremy Gilbert
placed the first “GPS Cache/Stash in MA state”. On Oct
2 the cache was found by a cacher named intuition. Now we have over
8,450 caches spread from the farthest western edge of the state all
the way to the capes and the islands. This event will celebrate all
of those caches by recognizing this grandfather of all of them in
the state:
GC74 - AKA First Mass.
The Basic Plan:
This event will be unique in the fact there will be two parts to
the event. The first part will be an early morning hike up the
mountain to First Mass to see the sunrise and the second part an
early evening hike to see the sunset. You need only attend one of
the two to claim this cache.
The Schedule:
FRIDAY MORNING SCHEDULE
6:00 Gather at the parking coordinates (N 42° 27.880 W 071°
09.160)
6:15 Hike up the mountain to the sunrise coordinates
6:30 Congregate at the sunrise coordinates and swap TBs and stories
(N 42° 27.559 W 071° 09.407)
6:41 Observe sunrise
6:45 Congregate at First Mass and swap TBs and stories
7:15 Hike back down to the parking coordinates
7:30 Morning portion ends
RAIN NOTE: If the rain is too heavy (as
determined by Loch Cache at 6:15) then the hike will not be
required to sign the logbook and pick up coins.

5:30 Gather at the parking coordinates (N 42° 27.880 W 071°

5:45 Hike up the mountain to First Mass
6:00 Congregate at First Mass and swap TBs and stories
6:20 Hike over to the sunset coordinates (N 42° 27.711 W 071°
09.520)
6:26 Observe sunset
6:45 Hike back down to the parking coordinates
7:00 Evening portion ends

Notes:
1. Sunrise and sunset coordinates will be posted before the event
and handed out at the parking area.
2. The key to logging this event will be signing the event logbook
while up on the mountain during one of the two hikes.

Just a reminder/clarification: you need only attend
one part of the event, either the AM or the PM, to log the cache. I
encourage attending both parts if you can but I do not encourage
logging it twice since it is just one GC#.
If for some reason you are not in shape to make the
hike up the mountain, for example you are recovering from knee
surgery, I will allow you to log the cache if you make it to the
parking area for the event and sign the logbook.

ATTENTION!
Dangermouse, SouthernDandy and I have designed a
special coin commemorating ten years of geocaching in
Massachusetts. (Attached you will find a picture of the front of
the coin.) We have minted only 100 copies and they will be
available for pick up at the event on Friday, October 1. They are
available now for preordering at a price of $15 each.
To order a coin (or two or more) please send an email to
LochCache@yahoo.com. In the subject line write "I want __ First
Mass coins". In the text of the email tell me again how many coins
you want, what your caching name is and whether you will be at the
morning event or the evening event. Please bring cash and exact
change.
Priority will be given to those who will be attending the event. We
reserve the right to limit quantities if demand exceeds
supply.
Please respond by 9-29 so we can have the coins ready for pick up
at the event.
