Im Mittelalter wurde in den heutigen Feengrotten Alaunschiefer abgebaut. 1910 wurde das vergessene Bergwerk endlich wieder entdeckt. In den 300 Jahren bis zur Wiederentdeckung hatte sich in dem unterirdischen Stollensystem eine faszinierende Tropfsteinwelt gebildet. Besonders schön ist der unterirdische Märchendom mit seiner Gralsburg, die auch schon Siegfried Wagner (Sohn von Richard Wagner) in seinem Schaffen inspirierte.
Die Saalfelder Feengrotten zählen heute zu den bekanntesten Naturattraktionen in Thüringen. Im Guinness Book of Records wurden sie wegen ihrem Farbenreichtum als „farbenreichste Schaugrotten der Welt“ eingetragen.
Neben hoch interessanten Führungen durch die Schaugrotten (für jedes Alter ist etwas dabei) kann man dort auf einem Naturlehrpfad Neues entdecken, das Feenwäldchen besuchen oder für die ganz Romatischen - auch im unterirdischen Märchendom heiraten. Doch nun zum eigentlichen Cache:
An folgenden Koordinaten könnt ihr Euer Cachemobil abstellen: N 50° 38.124 E 011° 20.466. Über ein Foto von Euch vor Ort würden wir uns sehr freuen. Die erste Möglichkeit bietet sich gleich am Parkplatz (siehe Beispielfoto).
An den o.g. Koordinaten steht ihr direkt vor einem runden Gebäude - dem Brunnentempel. Die Feengrotten und damit auch der Brunnentempel sind wie folgt geöffnet:
November - März (außer Januar)
täglich 10.30 - 15.30 Uhr geöffnet
April - Oktober
täglich 09.30 - 17.00 Uhr geöffnet
Januar
Sa/So 10.30 - 15.30 Uhr geöffnet
Im Inneren des Brunnentempels findet Ihr die Gralsquelle. Um nun den Cache loggen zu dürfen, benötigt Ihr ein paar Informationen, die Ihr direkt an der Quelle findet:
1. Seit wann wird aus dem Bohrbrunnen Wasser entnommen?
2. Der Gehalt welches Minerals trägt wesentlich zur Kariesprophylaxe bei?
3. Welche zwei Kationen kommen am häufigsten im Wasser vor (chem. Kürzel)?
4. Summe der gelösten Feststoffe in mg/l
Bitte schickt Eure Antworten über unser Profil. Direkt danach dürft ihr loggen. Sollte etwas nicht stimmen, melden wir uns.

During medival times in the area, today called Fairy Grottoes, there exisited several Alaun slate mines. In 1910 the long forgotten mines were discovered once again. During the past 300 years until the re-discovery the mines had changed into fascinating stalactite caves. Especially the fairy-tale dome with the Gralsburg, which already inspired Siegfried Wagner (son of Richard Wagner) are very beautiful and worth a visit.
The Fairy Grottoes in Saalfeld are one of the most natural attractions in the federal state of Thuringia. Even in the Guinness Book of Records the Fairy Grottoes are mentioned as the "most colourful show grottoes in the world".
Besides very interesting guided tours through the Grottoes (for every taste there is a guided tour) you can also learn new things walking along a nature study path, visit the woods of the fairy or for the most romantic - you can also get married inside the Fairy Grottoes at the fairy-tale dome. At the following coordinates you can park your car:
N 50° 38.124 E 011° 20.466. We would be very happy if you uploaded a pic with your log - see sample pic (no obligation).
Moving on to the above given coordinates you are standing in front of a round building - the "Temple of the spring". The Fairy Grottoes and the Temple of the spring are open as follows:
November - March (except January)

Inside the Temple of the spring building you will find the Gralsquelle (Grals spring). To claim this cache as a find you have to answer the following 4 questions. You'll find the answers directly at the source of the spring.
1. Since when can you take out water of the bored well?
2. The content of which mineral helps you to prevent caries?
3. Which two cations appearance most in the water (chem. abbr.)?
4. Sum of solute particulate material in mg/l
