Geocache Description:

This is a simple off-set multi to take you into the beautiful grounds of Belper's Cemetary.

The above co-ordinates will take you to the tree in question. Use the nearby gate to enter. All dogs must stay on their leads.

At the time of posting, the field opposite the parking had a couple of ponies in it. One seemed to be only about 38" tall!

The Belper Cemetary Chapel is situated in a beautifully maintained mature woodlands.

The burial of the dead was, for many centuries primarily dealt with by the church. However, during the period between 1852 and 1906 when churchyards became full to capacity, special provision had to be made by Parliament for the purpose of providing more space for the disposal of the dead. Many new cemeteries were created during this period, managed generally by a burial board and with ownership belonging to the local towns.

The passage of time has seen gradual changes over the years, more land has been purchased and all the cemeteries have expanded. In 1973 Amber Valley Borough Council took over the management of the cemeteries. With more emphasis on ‘customer’ requirements and environmental management the original traditional lawned cemetery is now developing.

The woodland area named 'The Glade' is located within Belper Cemetary, and was created in 2000, overlooking the eastern slopes of the Derwent Valley.

The site, bordered by a mature woodland is managed as grassland, to encourage the development of wildflowers. A small amount of tree planting has been undertaken and will continue over the years to develop to create woodland patches. The site will take many years to fully establish and will eventually become a naturally beautiful site.
