Geocache Description:

A small cammo cache.

Log and pencil supplied.

Recommended at night - if you dare!

Steps can be slippery when wet, ground zero is not generally used for vehicles.

Access is on foot and down a number of steps. There are 3 methods of accessing the cache. This cache replaces the archived 'Hidden Wonder' by Andy Rea.

The co-ords are for ground zero, but be aware that due to the overhead cover that the co-ordinates may be 'soft'.

Whilst researching this cache I found that Nottingham has a large number of reported supernatural happenings. This location does not feature amongst these, but as you descend from the modern day street level it is possible to imagine that you are going back through time. Once at the foot of the steps look up towards the open skies and the high roof. Then down the gradient - this leads towards The Park Estate and Newcastle Drive. Up the gradient leads towards Derby Road.

Access to the tunnel can be gained from Derby Road, there is a public thoroughfare situated at the side of the secure car park which allows 24 hours access. Steps to the tunnel are situated behind Car Park bay 70. The steps cut into the rock can be accessed from The Ropewalk/Upper College Street. These steps have gates at the top and bottom and, although I have not seen them locked I am aware from other logs of the previous cache that they can be. The third access route is longer and is by walking from The Park Estate. I hope you enjoy this hidden place and the history behind it.

The Park Tunnel was built in 1855 through the sandstone to allow horsedrawn carriages access to the The Park Estate from Derby Road in Nottingham. Although upon completion it was found that the gradient of the tunnel was too steep for the horse drawn carriages to manage.

Thomas Chambers (T.C.) Hine (1813-1899) designed the Park Tunnel (primarily as the main entrance to the Park) and developed the Park as a residential area in central Nottingham for the wealthier members of society. T.C.Hine was also made responsible for the later repair of Nottingham Castle and its conversion into a museum.

The Park Estate is home to some wonderful Victorian architecture. It has the largest gas street lighting system in Europe which makes it rather atmospheric at night and the skyline is dominated by Nottingham Castle.
