There we were on yet another adventure into the wilds of Yellowstone. As we were traveling on the Grand Loop, a shout of "what is that?", sounded from the rear passenger area of the E-People Machine. We found a safe place to pull over and gazed across the plains to see a giant lone boulder standing sentry amongst the grazing bison and elk. So the question was posed, how did this boulder get here? Like many others scattered across the Yellowstone, it was scraped from mountains far, far away by a glacier, the very glacier that sculpted the broad valley that you are now standing in. A glacier like those in Alaska today, and that were in Yellowstone thousands of years ago formed in frigid climates where more and more snow accumulates and turns to ice. These massive rivers of ice carve the land as they slowly advance down slope. This particular granite boulder traveled from the northeast for many miles before settling here when the glacier melted.
As you look at Yellowstone's beautiful mountains and valleys, imagine ice and snow in every direction, no trees, no grassland, just whiteness. Thousands of years ago, the ice was so thick that only the highest mountain peaks rose above the frozen landscape. The glaciers that buried Yellowstone shaped the mountains that you see today.
This particular boulder caught the fancy of the tour bus drivers back in the 1930’s. They would pause here, just as you are, to point out the beauty and take in the wonder of the land.
