pauvres Cathares qui fuillaient Simon de Monfort en 1220. Avant ça?
C'étaient des néolithiques . . . C'est peu rentable . . . Et à 286
metres, c'est trop pénible pour les gens d'aujourd'ui."
"Tu raconte! Je suis à bout de souffle!"
"T'as passé par le ravin en bas? Tu ne connais pas le sentier
sud?"
"Bien sûr - mais c'est beaucoup moins direct et moins intéressant.
Et en plein été c'est une vrai fournaise en haut."
"T'as pas peur des sangliers? T'as vu leurs traces partout?"
"Pas de problème! Si je tiens au sentier je peux passer à cinq
mètres d'un sanglier dans la garrigue sans le savoir."
"C'est vrai - ils ne sont pas bêtes. Les gros chasseurs par contre
. . . faut faire gaffe pendant une battue!"
"Mais tes chambres - pourquoi pas y vivre, toi-même?"
"La première est trop petite, et trop haute - et la cable est trop
lisse pour moi."
"D'accord. Mais la grande chambre au niveau sol . . . ?"
"Oui c'est vrai que ce n'est que quinze pas plus loin - mais ca je
réserve au visiteurs (tu les connais bien - les fouilleurs
clandestins et les fanatiques genre Rennes-le-Château avec leurs
rêves du tresor des Wisigoths . . ."
"Et à dix metres plus loin - la troisième?"
"Ouf! Trop dangereux. Et accessible que par ces gros clous de fer?
À mon age? Tu rigoles!"
"Tu dors ou, donc?"
"Je fais comme toi, cousin Caouno: je me couche dehors. Mais avec
un peu plus de classe que toi - au-dessous de la première. Et comme
toi, je ne craint pas la pluie, car je n'ai ni papier ni crayon. Ce
que je possède est fin comme le papier - mais pas inflammable.
C'est trop dur pour un crayon - mais facile à marquer."

"Nah. The last ones were Resistance men in '43. And before that, it
was those poor Cathars on the run from Simon de Monfort in 1220.
And before them, a bunch of Neolithics. It's not a great earner.
And at 286 meters, it's too much of a slog for people these
days."
"You're telling me! I'm quite out of breath!"
"You came up from the gully below? You know there's a track down
from the south?"
"Sure - but it's longer and less interesting. And in summer it's
baking up there."
"You're not afraid of wild boars? Have you seen their tracks all
over the place?"
"No problem - as long as you keep to the track you can pass a boar
in the garrigue without ever knowing it."
"True - they're smart. Those big game hunters on the other hand . .
. you have to watch out if there's a beat going on!"
"Anyway - those caves, why not live in one yourself?"
"The first one's too small and too high up - and the cable's too
smooth for me."
"OK. But what about the big one at ground level . . . ?"
"True - it's only a dozen paces away - but I'm leaving that for
visitors - you know: the metal-detector guys and those obsessive
Renne-le-Château types and their dream of Visigoth treasure."
"And the third one, a few steps on?"
"Hah! Too dangerous. And the only way up is on those old iron pins?
At my age? You're joking!"
"Where do you stay then?"
"Like you, cousin Caouno: I sleep outside. But with a bit more
style than you - under the first cave. And like you I don't worry
about rain since I've no paper or pencils. What I have is as thin
as paper but can't be burnt - it's too hard for a pencil but still
easy to mark."
