Fonte dos Galos
A Fonte dos Galos encontra-se a poucos metros de uma antiga
nascente de águas termais, na margem do Rio Este.
As águas termais eram conhecidas dos Romanos, que ali tomavam
banhos.
A Fonte foi construída em 1639 (não tendo relação com as águas
termais), mas os seus dois galos esculpidos dá o nome ao local
envolvente. Dizia-se que aqui se bebia a melhor água da cidade, mas
entretanto a construção de prédios na proximidade, que canalizaram
para lá os seus esgotos, acabou por destruir a nascente.
O local dos Galos é, sem margem alguma de dúvida, o mais
pitoresco local da cidade de Braga. O rio Este, embora de
pequeníssimo caudal, reduzido a um pequeno fio de água após uns
verões mais secos - mas com uma torrente forte e violenta no
Inverno, tão forte que chegou a causar graves estragos -
possibilitou que aqui se criasse um espaço diferente no contexto da
cidade, com vários moinhos (um dos quais ainda em funcionamento) e
um ambiente rural, que teima a não desaparecer no meio da
urbanização da cidade.
Infelizmente o rio neste momento é muito poluído devido ao
despejo de esgotos da zona envolvente. Esperemos que a recuperação
deste local único em Braga seja para breve.

The "Galos" fountain is a few meters way from an ancient source
of thermal waters, on the Este river.
The Fountain was built in 1639 (having no relation with the
thermal waters), but the two roosters carved in it, gives the name
Galos (rooster in Portuguese) to the local area. It was said that
this was the best drinking water in the city, but the construction
of buildings in the vicinity, who channeled their sewers to the
river, eventually destroyed the source.
The location of Galos area is, without any margin of doubt, the
most picturesque location in the city of Braga. Dominated by the
Este river, although with a very small flow, reduced to a trickle
of water after drier summers - but with a strong and violent flood
in winter, so strong that even caused serious damage - made it
possible to create here a place, with several mills (one still in
operation) and a rural environment, which insists in not
disappearing in the middle of the urban area.
Unfortunately the river is now very polluted due to of sewage
dumping from the surrounding area.
