Avenida Central
O Largo da Arcada, mandado rasgar no primeiro quartel do século
XVI pelo arcebispo D. Diogo de Sousa, desde que foi aberto, veio
tendencialmente a adquirir o estatuto de espaço central do
quotidiano dos bracarenses. Instalado no extremo poente do Campo de
Sant’Anna, a praça viria a concentrar os acessos viários que
demandavam Braga provenientes do interior regional. Para aí
verteriam alguns dos elementos mais marcantes da cidade.
O Passeio Público, projectado em 1854, viria a constituir, o
espaço romântico da cidade. Neste se desenrolariam alguns dos
acontecimentos sociais e festivos mais significativos da segunda
metade do século XIX, tendo prorrogado as funções de vitrine de
Braga até aos dias de hoje, isto apesar do referido jardim vedado
ter sido definitivamente desmantelado em 1913, para dar lugar à
"nova" Avenida Central. Esta seria mais uma vez bastante modificada
já nos fins do século XX e inícios de XXI, concedendo-lhe o aspecto
moderno actual e removendo o transito a veículos.
No extremo Norte da Praça da República, sobressaem ainda o Teatro
de S. Geraldo (1865-1929), actual Banco de Portugal; e o antigo
Banco do Minho (1865-1929), hoje a Caixa Geral de Depósitos.

The Arcada square, built in the first quarter of the sixteenth
century by the archbishop Diogo de Sousa, ever since it was opened,
acquired the status of the central space of the city. Installed in
the extreme west of the Campo de Sant'Anna. There went most of the
striking elements of the city.
The public road, designed in 1854, would be the romantic space
of the city. Here would unravel some of the social events and
festivities most significant in the second half of the nineteenth
century, having the function of the showcase of Braga until the
present day. The avenue chanched in the late twentieth and early
twenty-first century, giving it the modern look now, and removing
car trafic.
In the far north of the square we can highlight the Teatro S.
Gerard (1865-1929), the current Bank of Portugal, and the former
Bank of Minho (1865-1929), now the Caixa Geral de Depósitos.

Arcada
A Arcada propriamente dita, é a herdeira dos primitivos
alpendres mandados edificar no século XVI para albergar os
almocreves, os seus animais e mercadorias, que se dirigiam a Braga
para comerciar os seus produtos. Desde então o local jamais
perderia a sua vocação de ponto de encontro e local de
convívio.
A Arcada actual é da autoria de André Soares, que remonta ao
século XVIII, foi mandada construir encostada à velha muralha
medieval e, onde se destaca a Igreja da Lapa. Nos finais do século
XIX o edifício passou a ter dois pisos. (fonte)
Hoje é um local central, apelativo, animado por múltiplos cafés
e uma nova praça fechada ao trânsito.
The Arcada itself, is the heiress of the primitive building
porches built in the sixteenth century to house the muleteers,
their animals and goods, that were bound for Braga. Since then the
site would remain as a meeting point and social intercourse.
The building, dating back to the seventeenth century, was built
against the old medieval wall. In it we can found the Church of

Basílica dos Congregados
A Basílica dos Congregados, considerada uma das obras-primas da
arte Bracarense e Portuguesa, faz parte do antigo convento dos
Oratorianos, que se instalaram em Braga no inicio do Século XV.
A fachada da Basílica dos Congregados deve o seu singular traço
ao arquitecto André Soares. Uma das mais extraordinárias obras do
Barroco Português, teve o inicio da sua construção em 1703,
passando por vários "mestres" de arquitectura e construção, até à
sua conclusão, com a torre poente, em 1964. (fonte)
Congregados Basilica, considered one of the Bracarense and
Portuguese art masterpieces, is part of the former convent of the
Oratory, who settled in Braga at the beginning of the fifteenth
century.
The facade of the Basilica Congregados owes its unique feature
the architect André Soares. One of the most extraordinary works of
Portuguese Baroque, was the beginning of its construction in 1703
through various "masters" of architecture and construction to

Igreja da Penha
A história da Igreja da Penha começa em 1652 quando os
beneméritos Pedra de Aguilar e sua mulher fundaram no Campo de
Santa Ana, um recolhimento a receber donzelas ou viúvas, que
deveriam viver colectivamente na Regra de São Francisco, ao qual
deram o nome de Recolhimento de Beatas da Penha de França.
Em 1720, Dom Rodrigo de Moura Teles ampliou o recolhimento e
mandou construir a igreja, com a bela tribuna de talha dourada, e
as paredes interiores forradas a azulejo.
Em 1879, as instalações, entretanto converditas em convento (em
1727), cedidas, ao Asilo de infância desvalida de D. Pedro V,
tendo-se demolido o convento para no seu lugar surgir o actual
edifício.
Do antigo convento, resta o claustro, ajardinado, com um
fontanário ao centro e a Igreja. O interior da igreja é decorado
com azulejos do século XVIII, apresentando ainda um púlpito em

The Penha Church history begins in 1652 when the benefactors
Pedra de Aguilar and his wife founded in Campo de Santa Ana, a
house for receivable maidens or widows, who should live
collectively following the rule of St. Francis, which they named
"Recolhimento de Beatas da Penha de França".
In 1720, Don Rodrigo de Moura Teles expanded the building and
built the church, with a beautiful gallery of gilt, and the
interior walls lined with tile.
In 1879, the facilities where transferred to the Asylum of
disadvantaged children of D. Pedro V and the convent demolished,
emerging in its place the existing building.
From the ancient convent, are left the cloister garden with a
fountain in the center and the Church. The church interior is
decorated with tiles from the eighteenth century and a pulpit in
carved wood.

The Roby's Brothers were two brothers, born in Braga, Portugal,
who died in the campaigns of pacification of Africa in the early
