Der Steinbruch
Der Steinbruch Leimen liegt zwischen Heidelberg und Leimen größtenteils auf Leimener Gebiet. Er hat eine Größe von ca. 21 Hektar. In dem Steinbruch wurde von den Heidelberger Zementwerken Muschelkalk abgebaut.
Im Erdzeitalter der Trias (vor etwa 215 - 205 Millionen Jahren) entstand der Muschelkalk durch Meeresablagerungen. Das Urmittelmeer, die Tethys, überschwemmte weite Teile Europas. Durch Austrocknung und Ablagerung entstanden im Laufe der Zeit verschiedene Schichten, die man heute in drei Schichten aufgliedert:
- fossilienreicher Unterer Muschelkalk
- fossilienarmer Mittlerer Muschelkalk
- fossilienreicher Oberer Muschelkalk
Dieser Kalkstein wird als Rohstoffquelle genutzt und wird in Süddeutschland zum Beispiel in den Tälern des Neckars und seiner Zuflüsse abgebaut.
Naturschutzgebiet
Der Steinbruch wurde 1995 als Naturschutzgebiet ausgewiesen. Es ist der Lebensraum für bedrohte Amphibien und Fledermäuse. Auch seltene Pflanzenarten sind hier vorhanden. Das betreten des Geländes ist zum Schutz der Flora und Fauna nicht möglich, für diesen Cache aber auch nicht notwendig. Aber man hat einen guten Blick von der Brücke über das Naturschutzgebiet.
Hinweise und Informationen
Es handelt sich hier um ein Naturschutzgebiet. Die offiziellen Wege müssen zu keiner Zeit verlassen werden.
Achtet beim Besuch des Steinbruchs auf „Tretminen“ von Hunden. Leider missbrauchen viele Hundebesitzer den Ort als Hundetoilette.

Logfreigabe
Vor Ort findest du eine Informationstafel. Beantworte folgende Fragen und schreibe mir die Antworten über den GC-Nachrichtendienst:
a) In welchem Jahrzehnt wurde der Steinbruchbetrieb eingestellt?
b) Welche Distelart kommt hier vor?
c) Welche Krötenart lebt hier?
d) Wie hoch sind laut Info-Tafel die Felswände?
Mache ein Foto von dir oder einem persönlichen Gegenständen an den Koordinaten oder in unmittelbarer Nähe des Eartcaches. Das Foto muss eindeutig ein eigenes und vor Ort aufgenommen worden sein. Dein Gesicht kann zu sehen sein, muss es aber nicht. Achte darauf, dass die Antworten nicht durch das Foto zu beantworten sind.
Du kannst loggen sobald du die Antworten abgeschickt hast ohne auf eine Antwort zu warten. Falls damit etwas nicht stimmen sollte, melde ich mich bei dir. Logs ohne Beantwortung der Fragen werden gelöscht.
Ich freue mich, wenn du mit dem Logeintrag Fotos einstellst (freiwllig). Achte bitte dabei darauf, dass man die Infotafel nicht lesen kann. Schreibe keine Antworten in den Logeintrag.

The quarry
The quarry of Leimen is located between Heidelberg and Leimen, largely on Leimen area. It has a size of about 21 hectares. In the quarry coquina was mined from the Heidelberger Zementwerke.
In the Triassic eras (about 215 - 205 million years ago) emerged coquina by marine sediments. The primeval Mediterranean Sea, the Tethys, inundated large parts of Europe. Different layers arose by dehydration and sedimentation, now subdivided into three layers:
- Lower coquina (rich of fossils)
- middle coquina (poor of fossils)
- upper coquina (rich of fossils)
This limestone is used as a source of raw material and is mined in southern Germany, for example, in the valleys of the Neckar river and its tributaries.
Reserve
The quarry was designated in 1995 as a nature reserve. It is the habitat for endangered amphibians and bats. And rare plant species are available here. The entering of the area is not possible to protect the flora and fauna and it is not necessary for this cache. You have a good view from bridge over the nature reserve.
Notes and Informations
This is a nature reserve. The official ways are not to leave at any time.
Take care when visiting the quarry on the "land mines" of dogs. Unfortunately, many dog owners are abusing the site as a dog toilet.

a) In what decade the work in the quarry ended?
b) What kind of thistle you can find here?
c) What kind of toad lives here?
d) According to the board how tall are the walls?
Take a photo of yourself or a personal item at the coordinates or in the immediate neighborhood of the earth cache. The photo of your own must have been clearly recorded on site. Your face may or may not be visible. Make sure that the answers cannot be answered by the picture.
You may log directly after sending the answers to me. You don't have to wait for my answer. If something should be completely wrong I will contact you. Logs without answering the question will be deleted.
It would be nice if you could take pictures and add it to your log (optional). Please do not post answers to the question in your log entry and take care that the information at the information board is not to read at the pictures.
