Geocache Description:

This is cache #1 in the series. You are looking for a small brown tin.

Initially the name Appleton simply meant ‘orchard’. The Parish appeared in the Doomsday Book in 1086. At that time, it was famous for its fisheries, which are now non-existent.

Appleton Manor House, which can be seen from the church, dates back to about 1190-1200. The oldest part of the church is 12th century. The beautiful church tower (you can usually spot a dove in there!) houses ten bells.

In 1824, Whites of Appleton bell hangers was founded. It is still based in Appleton, and is now the oldest bell-hanging company in the UK.

The walk leads from Appleton to Besselsleigh Woods. This fine woodland, situated between Besselsleigh and Appleton is owned by the Vale of White Horse District Council. These caches would be brilliant to find in the Spring, when the woods are carpeted in beautiful bluebells! Please feel free to walk the footpaths on either side of the route through the middle as these will make a nice circular walk. The basic walk is just over 1 mile.

Wellington boots are recommended as the walk to the woods can get very muddy after rain.

W 001 21.641 near the well stocked village shop.
