As grutas naturais do Poço
Velho situam-se em Cascais, na margem direita da ribeira das
Vinhas. Em 1879, Carlos Ribeiro explorou estas grutas, tendo
detectado vestígios arqueológicos dos períodos paleolítico,
neolítico, calcolítico, Idade do Bronze e antiguidade tardia nos
sedimentos que preenchiam o seu interior. A principal ocupação é da
época neolítica e calcolítica e refere-se à utilização da gruta
como necrópole. Os artefactos recolhidos neste sítio encontram-se
no Museu do Instituto Geológico e Mineiro em Lisboa e no Museu
Condes de Castro Guimarães em Cascais.
As Grutas estiveram fechadas durante muitos anos mas abriram as
portas ao público em 2009:

Apesar de as grutas não estarem sempre visitáveis, esta cache tem
como objectivo dar a conhecer o local onde as mesmas se encontram.

POÇO VELHO GROTTOS
The natural grottos of the Poço Velho (Old Well)
are located in Cascais, on the right margin of Vinhas riverside. In
1879, the portuguese archeologist Carlos Ribeiro (1813-1882)
explored these grottos, having detected archeological tracks of
several prehistoric periods as Paleolithic, Neolithic, Calcolithic,
Bronze Age and Late Antiquity in the sediments that filled out its
interior. The main occupation refers to the use of the grotto as a
necropolis during the Neolithic and Calcolithic periods. The
collected artifacts in these grottos can be found at the Museum of
the Geological and Mining Institute in Lisbon and at the Museum
Condes de Castro Guimarães in Cascais.
The grottos were closed for many years but they opened twice to the
public in 2009:
