Beschreibung:
Pfungstädter Dünen
Enstehung
Der geologische Untergrund besteht aus Flugsand. Am Ende der
letzten Eiszeit, vor ca 13.000 Jahren, wurde er aus den
Schotterfeldern des Rheins, des Altneckars und des Mains
ausgeblasen und örtlich zu Binnendünen aufgeweht.
Verbreitung
Die Hauptverbreitung der Sandgebiete liegt in der
Rhein-Main-Ebene. Zu den wertvollsten Flächen im Landkreis
gehören
unter anderem die Pfungstädter Dünen, der Rotböhl bei
Gräfenhausen,
die Seeheimer Düne, die Klingsacker Tannenschneise und die
Flächen
in den Rödern bei Babenhausen.
Flora und Fauna
Sandgebiete sind durch Trockenheit, Wärme, Nährstoffarmut und
geringe Bodenentwicklung Lebensraum für eine Vielzahl von
gefährdeten Tier und Pflanzenarten mit europäischer Bedeutung.
Die
besonders gefährdeten Tierarten sind vor Ort auf einer
Informationstafel zu finden.
Aktiver Naturschutz
Durch Siedlungserweiterung und Straßenbau ging ein Großteil
der
Sandflächen verloren. Die Flächen im gesamten Kreisgebiet
sollen
durch die Bemühungen des Naturschutzes erhalten und gefördert
werden.
