Agios Ioannis lies at the end of the road that starts from Chora Sfakion and winds up in the mountains passing through the villages of Anopolis and Aradena with its metal bridge. It’s a small village with few inhabitants. If you like hiking, this place gives you the opportunity to walk to all directions to peaks, gorges, caves, woods and beaches and admire the relatively unspoilt landscape of the White Mountains.
The most suitable person to give you all the necessary information is Antonis Georgidakis, the owner of the small wooden canteen by the bridge of Aradena. He also rents some originally traditional rooms in Agios Ioannis, simple, clean and friendly, offers food and help with whatever you need. And of course he knows about geocaching!
The cache
When you arrive in Agios Ioannis, continue driving through the metal gate and park at N 35 13.830 E 024 01.087, just past Antonis’s rooms at an altitude of 770 m. Then go through the gate of the sheepcote and take down the path through the woods, marked with white squares on the trees and cairns. It’s clear enough and it takes 35 minutes to reach the edge of the cliff, the “balcony”.
You are now standing just over the small church of Agios Pavlos on the beach and to the west you can see the end of Samaria Gorge and the village of Agia Roumeli. Looking to the south you can see the island of Gavdos, which is the most southern point of Europe.
The cache is hidden in this area. It is a plastic container wrapped in a plastic bag. It contains a logbook, a pen, the Geocaching note in English and Greek, some goodies to trade and an FTF certificate.
Please hide well again.
There is the option to connect this cache to GC243B5 Agios Pavlos Balcony. You can see the hike here: Agios Ioannis and the two balconies at EveryTrail
