Geocache Description:

A QUICK CACHE AND DASH ON YOUR WAY TO CHICHESTER!!

St Mary’s, Chapel Lane, Sennicotts

Two miles east of Funtington, in a quiet lane off the Chichester road, lies St. Mary’s known as Sennicotts Chapel, originally according to Pevsner a “sweet example of unselfconscious local 19th Century Gothic”. Sennicotts is a large house built at the beginning of the 19th century by Charles Baker of the East India Company. In 1829 Charles Baker fell out with the Vicar of Funtington, George Bliss and petitioned to build Sennicotts Church. The chapel was duly built and consecrated by the Bishop of Chichester, but it was another 100 years before, following a Privy Council decision, it became part of the Benefice of Funtington. It has recently been refurbished with great attention to restoring the original detail.that includes the pink “pig’s blood” colour of the walls.

If anybody would like to expand this series we would just ask that you contact sadexploration first so he can keep track of the church numbers and names and to avoid duplication.
