Geocache Description:

up dated coordinates: N44 54.141 W110 23.568 To the West of this point see the bleached cliffs.

The canyon of the Yellowstone River at Calcite Springs in the area around Tower Falls exposes dark brown to greenish conglomerate of the Absaroka volcanic pile, the same rock that buries petrified trees throughout northwestern Yellowstone. Near the base of the canyon several steam and hot water vents, the Calcite Springs, the pale slope near the river level, exit through the rock to make small steam clouds on cool days. Near the vents, the surrounding rock has been altered by chemicals in the hot water, as hot as 83 degrees Celsius, slowly turning the cliff to a whitish, yellowish pulp. Away from the vast geyser basins, look for subtler patterns of thermal activity. Bare, bleached patches of ground, signs of hot springs and steaming earth, often lie hidden in lodgepole forest and along stream banks.
