La Tour des Sorcières en 1900

Les remparts médiévaux sont les premières
fortifications de Metz à succéder aux remparts romains. Ils sont
construit au treizième siècle et se composent à l’époque
d’un mur d'enceinte de sept kilomètres comprenant trente-huit
tours de guet et dix-huit portes. Le pont des Basses-Grilles
(construit en 1360) était défendu par la tour des Esprits, et
correspond à l'endroit où le bras de la Seille qui coulait rue des
Tanneurs et rue Haute-Seille jusqu’en 1903 se jetait dans
l’autre bras aux pieds des remparts. La tour éventrée par un
bombardement, dévoile des voûtes d'ogives gothiques. Elle avait
aussi pour nom Tour des sorcières, car, dit-on, les sorcières s'y
réunissaient…

The medieval ramparts were the first fortifications
of Metz to succeed the old Roman wall. They are built in the
thirteenth century and up to the time a wall of seven kilometers
comprising thirty-eight towers of watch and eighteen doors. The
bridge from the Lower Grilles (built in 1360) was defended by the
"Tower of spirits", and corresponds to where the arms of Seille
flowing streets of High Street and Tanners-Seille until 1903 flowed
into the other arm at the foot of the ramparts. The tower gutted by
bombing, reveals the Gothic rib vaults. She was also named "Tour of
witches", because, they say, witches gathered there ...
