How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

This is the second milestone cache in what is intended to end up as a mini series. The first is Salisbury 20 (GC1QKAT).

This is a standard MICRO cache on a busy road with a path running along it, so could potentially be a tricky retrieve without arousing the suspicions of those passing by or partaking of the local services.

Can you spot the milestone? Despite it's position, this milestone is well camouflaged!

Parking is, well, very close to the cache and the milestone but limited at times so please park carefully and considerately.

Please note: FOR MILESTONES TO BE OF USE, THEY ARE NEXT TO THE MAIN ROAD – PLEASE TAKE CARE OF CHILDREN AND PETS!

It was those master-road-builders, the Romans, who first defined the centre of Imperial Rome with the 'Golden Milestone' and placed milestones on their roads showing the distance to this datum so travellers could mark their progress. They are alternatively known as mile markers, mileposts, or mile posts (sometimes abbreviated MPs).

Later in the 16th century the advent of the Royal Mail with staging points focused attention on the roads again. The post riders had to make good time, specified clearly, and milestones came into their own again to measure progress.

Turnpike trusts erected many of the milestones that are still part of our roads today, and they were made in many shapes, forms and methods of construction. Placed during the times of the pedestrian, the carriage, and the bicycle, the milestone has a fascinating story to tell of how our roads came to be.
Because they were often locally produced and there was no standard design, milestones come in a fabulous range of types and designs, each route and region with its own character.

Many mileSTONES are not made of stone!

WELL DONE TO 37251 WHO FOUND THE CACHE JUST 37 MINUTES AFTER IT WAS PUBLISHED - WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG??
