Geocache Description:

The Vosakou Monastery is located 50 km east of Rethymnon in a small valley in Talea or Kouloukonas Mountains. Its name comes from ancient Greek and means a cow corral.

Moni (=Monastery) Vosakou was built in the 12th or 14th century and its church is dedicated to Timios Stavros (=Sacred Cross).
Its architectural style has been the result of several interventions over the years, the most important of which took place in the 19th century, after the Monastery had been destroyed by the Turks.

Visiting the Monastery complex is quite interesting. There used to be a candle and a tsikoudia/raki (=Cretan traditional alcoholic drink) manufacturing laboratory there. Among others it’s worth seeing the entrance, the church, as well as the artistic water fountain which was built in 1673.

In 1960 the Monastery was abandoned and turned into a sheepfold. The recent restoration started in 1998 and is still going on successfully.

How to get there

You need to drive along the old road from Rethymnon to Heraklion until you reach a village called Kambos Doksarou. There, at N 35 20.811 E 024 50.205, there are signs showing you to turn north. Follow this asphalt road and at the very end of it, after 6,5 km, you are at Moni Vosakou, also called Timios Stavros.
