Hintergrundinfos

Die Kokerei veredelt Steinkohle, bevor sie zur Stahlgewinnung im Hochofen eingesetzt wird. Kokerei Zollverein arbeitete im Verbund mit Schachtanlagen der Zeche Zollverein. Sie wurde 1957-1961 nach Plänen des Architekten Fritz Schupp errichtet, der dreißig Jahre zuvor auch die übertägigen Anlagen des Schachts XII geplant hatte. Es wurde eine Kokerei der Superlative – eine der größten und modernsten in Europa.

Wenige Jahre nach ihrer Stilllegung Anfang der 1990er Jahre erwarb die „Stiftung Industriedenkmalpflege und geschichtskultur“ die Schachtanlagen und Kokerei Zollverein. Aus einer „verbotenen Stadt“ entwickelt sich seitdem eine Mischung aus Museum, Gründerzentrum, Kunstinstallation, Park und Biotop.

Besonders reizvoll ist die Tatsache, dass die gesamte Anlage nicht vor sich hinrostet, sondern in einem schicken 30er-Jahre-Rot gehalten ist. Seit 2001 stehen die Kokerei und die benachbarten Schächte 1/2/8 und XII unter Denkmalschutz und sind seit 2002 als Weltkulturerbe bei der UNESCO registriert. Das Gelände liegt an der Europäischen Route der Industriekultur.

Background information

The coking plant refines coal before it is used for steel production in the blast furnace.
The coking plant "Zollverein" worked in conjunction with mines of the Zeche Zollverein. It was built in 1957-1961 by the architect Fritz Schupp, who had also planned the above-ground facilities of the mine shaft XII thirty years before. It was a coking plant of superlatives - the largest and most modern in Europe.

A few years after its closure in the early 1990s, the "foundation for Industrial Monuments and historical culture" acquired the mines and the coking plant. Ever since then we see the "forbidden city" develop to a combination of museum, center for start-ups, art installation, park and biotop.

Particularly appealing is the fact that the entire facility does not simply oxidize on its own but is held in a chic 30s-red. Since 2001 the coking plant and the neighboring pits 1/2/8 and XII are listed buildings and registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 2002.
The terrain is located on the European Route of Industrial Heritage.

Hier beginnt der Weg der Kohleveredelung. Von deinem Standpunkt aus siehst du ein gigantisches Schienenfahrzeug mit gigantischer Spurweite, das für die Zwischenlagerung der Kohle auf dem Weg von der benachbarten Zeche in die Kokerei sorgte.

Zollverein war nach ihrem Ausbau in den 1970er Jahren eine der größten und modernsten Kokereien in Europa. Täglich produzierten die 304 Koksöfen (nach 1973) 8.600t Koks. Bis zum Jahr 1993 verarbeiteten die 800m langen Ofenbatterien täglich 10.000t Kohle.

Inzwischen sind Zollverein und andere brachliegende bergbauliche Anlagen Biotope für Pioniergewächse. Neben den Kaninchen waren es vor allem die Birken, die die ungenutzten Flächen nach der Stillegung sofort in Beschlag nahmen. Seit einigen Jahren hat der Sommerflieder jedoch die Birke als Pioniergewächs abgelöst, auch auf den ehemaligen Gleisanlagen der Kokerei Zollverein.

Die vielen unterschiedlichen Lebensräume mit ihren unterschiedlichen Entwicklungsstadien machen auf dem ehemaligen Zechengelände die Artenvielfalt und den besonderen Wert für die Natur aus.

Die Koordinaten verweisen auf ein Bauwerk, in dem die Kohle auf dem Weg vom Bahnhof (hinter der Kokerei) in den Koksofen in schwindelnder Höhe im rechten Winkel ihre Richtung wechselt.

Dabei handelt es sich um Teer, Rohbenzol, Schwefel, Ammoniak und Schwefelsäure, die aus dem Kokereigas abgeschieden werden. An den angegebenen Koordinaten findest du die Salzverladung, in der das erzeugte Ammoniaksalz auf Reisen geschickt wurde.

Über sechs Schlote direkt an den Ofenbatterien wurden nicht verwertbare Abgase abgeführt. Die Koordinaten befinden sich in unmittelbarer Nähe von einem besonders großen Exemplar. Was befindet sich hier außerdem? Rechne mit dem zutreffenden Wert für "G" weiter.

Non recycable exhaust fumes were discharged using six smokestacks attached directly to the furnaces. The coordinates are in the immediate vicinity of a particularly large specimen. What is located here as well? Reckon with the appropriate value for "G".

Von der Maschinenseite der Kokerei, auf der die Drückmaschine zum Leerdrücken der Öfen steht, sind es nur wenige Meter auf die Koksseite, auf der der fertige Koks in den Löschwagen fällt. Im Ofen selbst, dem du auf dem Weg von der 6. zur 7. Station besonders nahe kommst, wird die Kohle rund 20 Stunden lang unter Luftabschluss bis zu 1.400°C erhitzt.

An den angegebenen Koordinaten findest du in der Löschgleishalle die Lokomotive, die einst den fertigen Koks unter die Löschtürme in deinem Rücken schob. Damit ist die Koksherstellung übrigens fast beendet. Der Kokskuchen musste nur nach Größen gesiebt werden, dann war er bereit für die Verwendung zur Stahlerzeugung im Hochofen.

Es gab zwei Wege, die Kokerei mit Kohle zu versorgen. Entweder kam das Material direkt von der wenige hundert Meter entfernten Zeche Zollverein oder sie wurde in Zügen herangeschafft. Seit der Schließung der Zeche Zollverein 1986 war die Schiene der einzige Versorgungsweg für die Kokerei.

Nahe der Koordinaten findest du einen Verladepunkt, an dem die von außerhalb angelieferte Kohle von der Eisenbahn auf Förderbänder gelangte. Ein einfaches Stahlfachwerk trägt das Gebäude, das mit Backstein ohne tragende Funktion aufgefüllt wird. Es war das Ziel des Architekten Fritz Schupp, mit seiner kubischen, streng rechtwinkligen Formensprache Ordnung und Monumentalität zu vermitteln.

There were two ways to provide the coke oven with coal. Either the material came directly from Zeche Zollverein a few hundred meters away or it was brought in on trains. Since the closure of Zeche Zollverein in 1986, the railway was the only supply route left for the coke oven.
